Tales of Schwegman - Sparky Anderson

Harry Schwegman's father and uncle both played major league baseball. When he was 10-years old in 1963, Harry was ball boy for the Cincinnati Reds, then managed by Sparky.

While you might think that a ball boy's primary duties revolve around shagging fungos, in Harry's case, his primary duty was to hold the lighter to light Sparky's cigarette because Sparky would get so nervous before the game, his hands would be unable to light his own smoke.

Heady stuff for a boy of 10.

Portents of things to come.
