Jacobs girls soccer coach Anthony Cappello is hoping his team can make a run in the 2011 Pepsi Showdown.

"Each game this year, we've gotten better and better," said Cappello, whose team began the week 5-2. "Although we returned a solid core of our team from last year, we still added some vital new pieces."

Those vital pieces will be needed if the Golden Eagles want to make a run in the tournament, which began Tuesday with 20 matches at 20 sites.

The two-week tourney, which features 100 games and 1,000 area players, is highlighted by back-to-back Saturdays when all teams will be showcased at Olympic Park in Schaumburg.

"The Pepsi Showdown creates exposure for girls high school soccer around the entire Chicagoland area," Oak Park coach Paul Wright said. "Often teams play very similar schedules every year, and the Pepsi Showdown introduces my team to many teams we wouldn't normally be able to play or see. This tournament, to us, is just as big as the state tournament."

The title match will take place April 17 as part of a doubleheader with the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park. A complete tournament bracket and schedule can be found at pepsishowdown.com.

Speaking of Jacobs: Cassidy Sherman (7 goals), Lauren Grady(6 goals, 6 assists) and defender Margaret Rivera are three big reasons why Jacobs won three of its first five matches.

Think fast: In a battle of ranked teams last Saturday, Neuqua Valley took a 1-0 lead against Downers Grove South. Thirty-three seconds later, Downers Grove South's Jessica Bronke tied the score 1-1.

Two days earlier, Neuqua Valley's Zoey Goralski recorded a hat trick in five minutes against Hinsdale Central.

One-girl show: While West Chicago's Meagan Radloff doesn't play for a powerhouse program, odds are you've heard and read her name before.

The senior played a key role in the Wildcats' 3-2 upset over Wheaton North two weeks ago. Question is, can she carry West Chicago up the DuPage Valley standings?
