Baseball | Tim Barry takes one for team as Oak Forest tops Lemont
Tim Barry is a two-time first-team all-state outfielder who is eight home runs shy of the state's all-time record.
Josh Ferry pitched a perfect game in his previous start, has a scholarship to Illinois and 28 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings this season.
Their confrontation with the bases loaded and the game on the line Tuesday ended with a thud.
Ferry's first pitch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh hit Barry in the back, bringing an end to Oak Forest's 3-2 victory against Lemont.
Ferry and Louisville-bound junior Kyle Funkhouser of Oak Forest dominated hitters through six innings before each team pushed across two in the seventh. Both of Oak Forest's runs in the inning were unearned.
"When Tim came up I knew he had a chance," said Funkhouser, who allowed five hits while striking out 12, including the first five. "In my head I felt as if something good would happen.
"This is a big win in my career and for our team. I beat Lemont last year, but we've got a much younger team this year. I hope the momentum from this game carries over into the rest of the season.
Barry, who singled, struck out and grounded out in his other three at-bats against Ferry (2-1), is stuck on 41 career homers and zero this season, but Oak Forest (3-1-1) managed to prevail thanks to a solo shot by Bobby Sheppard and a terrific at-bat by Brian Richard.
With the Bengals down to their final strike, Richard, a freshman who misplayed a ball in right field during the rally by Lemont (4-4) in the top of the seventh, fouled off several Ferry offerings before drawing a walk.
A hit batter and an infield error allowed the Bengals to tie it at two before Barry's unusual game-winning RBI.
"He's the best pitcher I've ever faced," Richard said. "I was hoping to either get a good pitch to drive, keep fouling off pitches to draw a walk or turn and take one if it was on the inside."
